Fire Doors

Fire doors are a vital part of the passive fire strategy and compartmentation within a building. Fire doors are also one of the only fire stopping components which are handled and tampered with by anyone who has access to the building on a daily basis. The fire doors act by creating a seal from one fire compartment to another in accordance with the fire strategy for the building to slow the spread of fire and providing essential escape routes, however the effectiveness of the fire door hinges on their proper installation and maintenance. It is the recommendation of the UK fire protection association that a fire door survey be carried out every 6 months by the building’s owner or responsible person.

Under the regulatory reform (fire safety) order 2005, every workplace and commercial building must legally have an appointed ‘responsible person’ who will oversee and ensure all necessary measures are in place to prevent fires from occurring and spreading. This also includes activities such as fire alarm testing, carrying out fire risk assessments, evacuation procedures and all other aspects of fire stopping.

The responsible person does not have to carry out these activities themselves and can utilise assistance from specialist third party qualified and competent companies.
